The quarterly report for the month of September will be in the form of a closed portfolio, closed notebook, closed draft paper INDIVIDUAL TEST!

Before you go crucify me, think about it... NO PAPERWORK!

I expect each group member to be familiar with some basic knowledge of their project (title perhaps?), be knowledgeable about the technical details and specific procedures of the project, and be able to cite supporting facts proving the scientific feasibility and integrity of the proposal. And of course, there will be questions about the progress of the project and each member's contribution.

Note that the test will contain parts that are specific to your project. For those who have changed their topic, the test will be based on the latest topic you are currently working on. The result of this exam will also affect your INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE GRADE (aside from what your data notebook says and the contribution I get to observe during the STR period)

REVISED Guidelines for Submitting Requirements

Because not everybody follows (or can follow?) my previous set of guidelines, I've made an effort to make it easier and more logical.

FROM NOW ON, please follow the following rules when submitting your requirements.

ALL PAPERWORK (proposals, drafts, reports, slideshows...) must be submitted by email.

DEADLINE IS 9PM.
(We have been receiving reports that you don't sleep anymore so don't use "STR" as an excuse to YM/Facebook/Twitter after 9PM :) Paperwork received after 9:00:00 will be considered late.)

Only the RRL/Project Portfolio, Data Notebook and the ISEF forms will be submitted physically.
Submit your capsule proposal, final proposal, draft paper, final paper and whatever requirement that would have "proposal" and "paper" in their names to str2kawashima+paper@gmail.com.

Indicate your Section, Group Code and whatever the name of the requirement is in the SUBJECT of the email. No need to write it in some special OneWordFormat, "Revised Final Proposal" is going to be just fine.

If you do not receive an automated reply, it could mean that your message did not conform with the format, was not filed properly, or was not received at all.

Topic Proposal, Capsule Proposal and Oral Defense

Your capsule proposal (see Research Plan - ISEF 2010 form for format) is due 7 days after topic approval OR before oral defense. For topics approved last Monday/Tuesday, your capsule proposal if you would pursue that topic would be due next Monday/Tuesday respectively. If you plan to submit your capsule proposal on the day of your presentation, please submit it as a printed copy.

For those with approved topics but did not submit it as a topic proposal, please be reminded to submit a topic proposal detailing the real-life problem, proposed solution, specifications and scientific basis/conceptual framework for your project. You may submit your topic proposal as a group but please attribute the person/s who came up with the idea. In case your proposal was derived from an idea of a teacher, indicate his/her name for proper attribution. The topic proposal should be submitted BEFORE submitting your capsule proposal.

How to avoid crashing in STR2

I've heard, read and even talked with some of you about your cluelessness for an STR topic. So to make things a little "easier" for you, I'll give you an idea of why we reject topics.

Recycled topics. Spare us the usual antibiotic and antifungal stuff unless they are truly novel (ie. the quorum-sensing inhibition project). This is not science high school material. Strive to find NEW topics. This is often the pitfall everyone cannot seem to avoid.
Very simple topics. Challenge yourself a bit. Don't submit a topic whose entire testing phase will be finished in one day. This includes food topics that are not well thought through (but we do accept interesting food tech projects)
Vague topics. Sometimes what you want to do would be both novel and interesting, yet it gets rejected... Why? The most probable reason is that you did not explain it fully. Please understand that we cannot evaluate your ideas if you cannot communicate them effectively. To avoid submitting again, make sure to fully thresh out your topic proposals.
Unfeasible topics. I actually like this kind of rejection. It means you have exercised your imagination and thought about something novel, but as it turns out, it just cannot be done due to one or a number of reasons - it's beyond you, it'll kill you, no one has what you need, or science won't allow it. Note that sometimes this gets mixed up with Number 3 because you probably did not fully explain the scientific basis for your solution.

Now to really make it "easy" for you, let me give you some suggestions on what I personally think are interesting fields to explore for your topics...

Mathematical Biology. This is quite interesting as these two fields are not usually thought to intersect. These explore the world of biology and try to explain it in terms of mathematics and algorithms.
One of this year's special award winners in ISEF worked on "sex determination of Philippine Eagles" using anatomical wingspan and claw data only because as it turns out, finding out whether a Philippine Eagles is a boy or a girl is not as simple as it sounds.
Physics. Nobody works on physics projects. That alone gives you an edge. Physics is the most fundamental of all sciences and all sciences can be analyzed by Physics so why don't you give it a try. There was one promising physics topic last year, but it lacked the steam to plow ahead.
Computer Science. If you do not want to do labwork after classes or resent the fact that you cannot cram your work at home because you lack the equipment, CS projects are perfect for you - all you need it a computer and notepad (and perhaps a compiler).
Engineering. Another rarity during YMSAT, almost no one pushes through with an engineering topic yet these are usually the most successful! Cases in point - alternative PCR device won in UP and the microtremor kids went to ISEF.
Chemistry and Materials Science. I believe this is hard because we have no equipment but that need not be the case- we can always collaborate! Inventive new materials will not only win awards, but also be relevant in everyday life.
Systems Biology. Everything these days seem to be interdisciplinary and systems biology is probably its best example. A new paradigm in biology is emerging, that is, looking at the big picture instead of scrutinizing just one pixel of information. The goal of systems biology is to find emergent properties that are not obvious when we look at things individually. It is in the intersection of biology, chemistry, physics and computer science and mathematics. How exciting.

I'm not dissuading you from doing traditional biology projects, but more often than not, it is the default. Try to explore your options.

There are quite a lot of opportunities waiting for good projects. Aside from the competitions, the prizes, the trips abroad and the TV airtime... there is the fulfillment that when you look back at your fourth year in Pisay, you can proudly say that you had a meaningful research project.

For those who were my students in STR1, I believe I have adequately prepared you for the deadlines, requirements and sheer load STR2 brings though you probably hated my guts for it.

Since the official start of the school year has been moved back a week (start on June 15) and you seem to have plenty of time on your hands right now, I'll prepare you already for what's to come...

DEADLINES FOR THE FIRST QUARTER:

June 19 - Topics Identification (MINIMUM of 3 topics per student, see below for details)
June 29 - Capsule proposal of approved topic by group
July 6 - Task list, Network Chart and other project planning work by group
July 13-24 - Oral defense of approved topic by group

*All email submission of paperwork must be received by 9PM that day.

For your proposed topic, please make sure to state your PROBLEM, PROPOSED SOLUTION and SCIENTIFIC BASIS/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK behind your solution.

Please avoid common topics that are done year-in year-out (test for antibiotic activity of plants and the like). I suggest you take a look at the past winners of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to see if what you are thinking is up to par with our expectations. For those who took up SSIP, you still have to apply your topic for approval. It is not automatic.

Good luck. At least now you have something to do. Deadline is Friday, June 19, 2009.

Third Quarter 3rd Year GRADES

Some students have asked for a recalculation of their grades based on sheets posted. First of all these sheets are not official and I will have to check with the grades I wrote down first. Second, I just realized that all sheets were not the most recent revision as the "Research Work" column all had perfect marks, which is the default until deductions are considered.

Here are the most updated and recent list of grades. The only point of error will be if YOUR PREVIOUS GRADE is not what is written on the sheet. Please call my attention if that is the case.

Note: Light blue highlight means your grade has changed after being updated from the previous post. Blue green/Teal highlight means your grade has changed from the previous post because of a "greater than 100%" formula error in your grade.

YMSAT Poster

Just to clarify things since I've been hearing some wrong information regarding the THIRD YEAR STR1 POSTER...

Poster size is half of a full cartolina. I do not want to give you the specific dimensions as it would be better if you do not spend on printing and use a perfectly fine piece of cartolina. By the way, you may present it in portrait or in landscape as long as it is half the size of a cartolina.
I am requiring only 3 things in your poster: title, objectives and a flowchart of your methodology. You can insert other information such as your background of study and significance but this is not required. I also suggest that you decorate your poster with pictures to make it more attractive.

Poster judging will be on the afternoon of Tuesday next week. You may be required to be there after your other activity in the afternoon. Top 3 groups per section will be called for a brief Q & A by the judges so BE ON STANDBY Tuesday after Bio games.

Problem:

Alfred, Jeff and Ryan are working on a scientific investigation to prolong the life of man. They searched far and wide to gather promising samples either by confirmed by science or found in folklore. Ryan gathered the samples traversing the regions of the earth while Alfred and Jeff prepared their materials and searched for the equipment they needed in accomplishing this monumental feat. After six months, Ryan came back with a truckload of plants, animals and some nasty things. He approached Alfred with a disdainful countenance and asked, "Why did I have to go through this?!" Alfred and Jeff looked puzzled and were out of words. "One should not discount any possibility with simple prejudice in science," Alfred said knowingly as Ryan muttered. With the samples collected and materials and equipment ready, they were now ready to begin.

A year into experimenting each sample with lab mice, Jeff realized something was wrong but could not pinpoint what. His gut was telling him something he could not understand. "I should have listened more intently then I guess." Jeff said and shrugged of the feeling. Besides they successfully tried out all the various samples and have narrowed the candidates to a more manageable number of 10. While Jeff was rationalizing to himself, Ryan and Alfred were in deep thought. "We now just have 10 samples, all effective in varying degrees, but we can't pursue all 10. We already almost went bankrupt just testing the others", Alfred thought. Ryan was equally perplexed at the matter. He thought of several factors that could affect their life-changing decision such as effectiveness, side effects, taste and even marketability. "Science alone could not make us rich", he thought and chuckled lightly. Faced with a decision with innumerable factors, the three decided to solve it the "old fashioned" way - randomly select 3 from the 10 and keep the others in storage.

Two years have passed and they are no closer to their objective with no end in sight. Alfred, Jeff and Ryan have turned indifferent to each other. Lab work has just become rudimentary labor. Gone are the laughter and the horse-playing and the pranks. They couldn't give up because their pride wouldn't let them and yet every minute more becomes ever so less tolerable. Ryan thought of trying out the other samples in cryogenic storage, only to be disappointed that they have become unusable. Jeff began to question their methodology and read back back on their journals to no avail. Alfred seemed to be most affected as he has simply stopped talking. He wished for an end to an endless search without realizing the pursuit of science is a ceaseless journey to seek the truth.

Question:

Scrutinize the problem above and make an essay about your observations of the research. Include as well your opinion on the failures and pitfalls together with potential solutions to these problems. Write down CONCRETE and SPECIFIC steps they could/should have taken to prevent or mitigate their current circumstance. Avoid being too general or simple negation of they procedure as these arguments do not merit credit. Note that vague descriptions and plot are for open interpretation. Analyze and apply your understanding of research to see what went wrong. Lastly, is there any hope for them?

(For example, it will increase your divisor from over 40 points to over 60 points, ie. 22/40 vs 37/60 given you get 15 points. If you decrease your actually percentage, the extra credit will not count, ie. 22/40= 55% vs 32/60= 53.3% if you get 10 points only)

I have finished checking, commenting and grading all your RRLs. I'm sorry I won't be able to return it by email tonight, but I promise you'll have it in your mailbox tomorrow. I will be mailing you back by groups, so I'm sorry if your groupmates will see your grade.

Our deadline on October 5, 8:00 PM is still a go. You have the entire week to do this. I suggest you pass your methodology early to avail of the bonus. However, there will be no bonus points for early RRL submissions.

Last thing, no oral presentations for the second quarter. We've moved it as a third quarter requirement because we have no more time.

Remember September 5? That's today. And today is the DEADLINE FOR MAJOR REVISIONS to the proposal. Submit until 11:59pm.

I did not return any final proposal because there was nothing major I had to edit. What I want submitted today are the things we talked group-by-group about your methodology. Easy right?

Given this definition of the deadline, it means that revisions can come anytime. I JUST EXPECT MAJOR ONES TODAY. Lastly, for those dramatically changing their projects, today isn't really your deadline.

STR1 Grades

Rubidium, Sodium and Strontium - your grades for the first quarter are finished (but are not yet final final final). I said I would post it today but something happened to my internet connection (and it gave me time to recheck my calculations)

Before I post your grades (still deciding if I will write your name down), here are some statistics:

No one got a 1.00
The highest rounded-off percentage grade is 95
There are 12 students in three sections who got a 1.25
There are four who failed, with one of them getting a 5.0 because of non-submission of requirements
Sodium has the best per section average of 1.833, followed by Rubidium with 1.848 and Strontium with 1.917. However, Strontium has the most number of 1.25's.

I have yet to post the scores due to certain circumstances, but for sure I will give you your unofficial 100% tally if you request for it personally on Monday.

Final Proposal
Network Chart and Task List. I will use this to track your milestones and see if your on track with the deadlines you yourselves set.
Research forms (get your copy from OJ) and research plan. Required forms are the checklist and forms 1, 1a & 1b. Fill out other forms as needed depending on the nature of your project. Please have these signed by your parent/guardian.
Data notebook. Please prepare a lab notebook (Record notebook in National) with a BLACK cover.
Lab gown. REQUIRED for all wet lab work
A copy of the Laboratory Rules and Policies from the STR unit. I will hand this to you this week.

I've "bended" my policy on topic proposals

For the longest time now, I have always said that I will not simply spoonfeed you a topic. I believe that topic generation is a vital part of your [hellish] STR experience. However, given the state of topics and your seeming lack of enthusiasm to flood me with possible proposals, I have bended my policy somewhat.I have said to a number of my students that they have a sound framework but what they're proposing is just not novel anymore or its not that significant. I challenged them to think outside the box and refocus their topic. However, it seems everybody is bidding their time a little bit too much. For example, I have a student whose topic is promising - fish mucus. But fish mucus for antifungal creams is not novel anymore. In such cases I am willing now to brainstorm with you. However, if you suggested garlic for its antimicrobial properties, I cannot help you develop that because that is a dead-end topic already.If you want to consult on possible topics, especially if its on biology, molecular biology or any life science-related topic (modeling something related to biology) you can disturb me every day after 10:50 AM. Note that I will still not give you a topic outright, but I can help you develop it. Therefore, you must have something rather specific in mind already. For technology proposals, I highly encourage you to talk to Mr. Alcarez or Ms. Xavier for insights and comments. Talk to the teachers in field of your research interest. Float your topic with them and have their inputs. I promise you it will save you time and effort and most probably, you'll get your topic approved.Please please PLEASE flood me with more topics. More entries, MORE chances of winning! Our deadline for the final proposal is on July 23 or the Wednesday before periodicals. Today is July 3. Do the math.I am very concerned with the state of our STR2 classes. Right now, you only have 5% of your grade. No matter how much wrangling and consideration I put, 5% will not even give you a 4.0.

Topic Proposal Grades and Evaluation

I didn't include your names or sections, just try finding your proposal based on the title of the project. So far, there are too many E's for your own good.

Note that projects labeled "Rejected" mean you'll have to really defend it or radically change focus if you still want to pursue the topic. If your project is labeled "Returned" it means you'll have to develop your topic further or the framework is still shaky and needs clarification. Lastly, if its "Pending" it means I haven't found an expert to comment on your topic or your topic has not been discussed by the committee.

QUESTION: What does an "E" mean?

If it's rejected, it mean "E-basura".
When the proposal isn't really clear or has a shady framework, it mean "E-balik" for clarification.
However, when the proposal is really bull, E means "E-wan", just like the grade you'll get,
